The 10-Minute Trick for Getting Rid of That Cluttered Counter
Share

There’s a strange thing about kitchen and bathroom counters.
You can clean the entire room, but if the counter is covered with five random things, the space still looks messy.
The good news? You probably don't need to organize everything.
Try this instead.
Clear It Completely
Set a timer for 10 minutes.
Take everything off the counter and put it somewhere nearby—not back in its usual place yet.
Now look at the empty surface.
It usually becomes obvious which things actually need to live there.
Make Three Quick Groups
You don't need fancy storage bins or an elaborate organizing system.
Just make three piles:
Use every day
Things that genuinely need to stay within easy reach.
Use sometimes
Things you need, but not often enough to take up prime counter space.
Why is this here?
Items that have simply accumulated.
That last group is usually bigger than expected. 😅
Put Back Less Than You Took Off
Here's the part that makes the biggest difference:
Don't try to find a place for everything on the counter.
Put the everyday items back.
Move occasional-use items into a drawer, cabinet, basket, or shelf.
For everything else, decide whether it belongs somewhere else—or whether you can simply let it go.
Keep One Empty Spot
You don't need a perfectly empty counter.
But leaving one small section completely clear makes the whole space feel more organized.
It also gives you somewhere to temporarily place things without immediately creating another pile.
And when the counter starts filling up again?
Do the same 10-minute reset.
No complicated system. No weekend-long organizing project.
Just a little less stuff in the place where you notice it most.
