🌻 10 Things to Do in Your Garden Before Summer Ends

By Kimberly Williams,

It happens every year. You blink, and suddenly August is almost over. The long summer days that felt endless in June are quietly slipping away — and if you're a gardener, that means there are a few things worth taking care of before the season winds down.

Don't panic. None of these are big projects. Think of this as your late-summer garden checklist — the kind you can chip away at over a few weekends and feel really good about by the time fall arrives. 🌸

1. 🌱 Plant a Second Round of Fast-Growing Vegetables

Many gardeners don't realize there's still time for a second planting of quick-growing vegetables. Lettuce, spinach, radishes, and kale all do beautifully in the cooler temperatures of late summer and early fall. Get them in the ground now and you could be harvesting fresh greens well into October.

2. ✂️ Deadhead Your Flowering Plants

Removing spent blooms — called deadheading — encourages your plants to keep producing new flowers instead of putting their energy into seed production. It takes just a few minutes per plant and makes a noticeable difference in how full and colorful your garden looks through the end of the season.

3. 💧 Check Your Watering Routine

Late summer heat can be brutal on plants, especially those in containers. Take a few minutes to check that everything is getting enough water — pots dry out much faster than garden beds, and a plant that looks "fine" in the morning can be stressed by afternoon.

Consider switching to early morning watering if you haven't already — it reduces evaporation and gives plants time to absorb moisture before the heat of the day.

4. 🌿 Pull Weeds Before They Go to Seed

This one is time-sensitive. Weeds that go to seed in late summer will give you hundreds of new weeds to deal with next spring. Spend an hour pulling them now — especially any that have already started to flower — and you'll save yourself a lot of work next year.

5. 🪴 Repot Any Rootbound Container Plants

If your potted plants have been in the same container for a year or more, check whether they've become rootbound (roots circling the bottom of the pot or poking out of drainage holes). Repotting into a slightly larger container now gives them room to grow and helps them stay healthy through the rest of the season.

6. 🐛 Do a Pest Check

Aphids, spider mites, and other garden pests tend to peak in late summer heat. Take a close look at the undersides of leaves on your most vulnerable plants — roses, tomatoes, and herbs are common targets. Catching an infestation early is much easier than dealing with a full-blown problem.

A strong spray of water can dislodge many pests without any chemicals at all.

7. 🌾 Let Some Herbs Go to Flower

If you grow herbs, consider letting a few plants — basil, dill, cilantro — flower and go to seed at the end of the season. You can collect the seeds for next year's planting, and the flowers also attract beneficial insects to your garden.

8. 🍂 Start Thinking About Fall Bulbs

It sounds early, but fall-planted bulbs (tulips, daffodils, alliums) need to be ordered or purchased soon — they sell out quickly and need to go in the ground before the first frost. Spend 10 minutes this week browsing and placing an order so you're not scrambling in October.

9. 🧹 Give Your Garden Tools Some Attention

Before the busy harvest season kicks in, take a few minutes to clean, sharpen, and oil your most-used tools. A clean, sharp trowel or pair of pruners makes every garden task easier — and well-maintained tools last for years longer than neglected ones.

10. 🌅 Actually Sit and Enjoy It

This one is the most important and the most overlooked. You've put time and love into your garden all season. Before the days get shorter and cooler, make a point of sitting outside in the evenings — with a cup of tea, a glass of wine, or just some quiet time — and actually enjoying what you've created.

Gardens aren't just for working in. They're for living in. 🌿✨

Summer is beautiful, but it doesn't last. Take a little time this week to tend to these tasks — and then put down the tools and soak it all in.
